Tetris origins film

No, thankfully it's not a film about how the blocks came to be.

According to reports Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, X-Men: The Last Stand)is developing and producing a biopic based on Alexey Pajitnov who designed Tetris.

For those who don't know about the origins of Tetris it was developed in 1984 by Pajitnov whilst he was working for the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Moscow. The legal and licensing rights then became very murky with several companies 'owning' the rights to the game.

It wasn't until 1989 when the game was bundled with the Game Boy that Tetris became a worldwide smash and it was finally in 1996 when Pajitnov started to receive royalties.

It is a very interesting story and one that certainly should be read up on. Hopefully the film will not take liberties and will tell the story as is, time will tell.

  1. Well that's a relief - when I first heard they were "doing" a Tetris film, I was picturing something like Michael Bay's Battleships, only with Tetris blocks. Somehow a biopic didn't enter my mind, but it's a story that's worth being told!

    1. Haha, yes I was just going to make the same comment. I could totally see Hollywood doing a movie about invading blocks with 75% of the film being human dramas/relationships etc. Glad to be proved wrong!
